FBI Background Check Fingerprinting in Marbella
Marbella has a large, settled American and international community and no American diplomatic office of its own. The nearest one is a consular agency in Fuengirola, about thirty kilometres east along the coast — close enough that people assume it is the answer to their FBI background check problem, and it is not. The agency is small, appointment-only, and like every other American post in the world it neither takes fingerprints for FBI purposes nor issues apostilles. Meanwhile Marbella sits in Málaga province, which is the unit that actually determines where the finished document gets filed and which sworn translators are listed near you. Where fingerprints are taken in Marbella
Fingerprints are captured in Marbella by appointment, digitally, on the tenprint standard the FBI accepts. What this replaces is the FD-258 card route, and on the Costa del Sol that route fails unusually often: the card has to be rolled competently by someone, posted to the United States, and judged for legibility only after landing, on a queue measured in months rather than weeks. A single unusable impression means rejection, the fee is not refunded, the card is not returned, and everything restarts. Because a digital capture is assessed instantly, an impression that would have failed is simply retaken before the appointment ends.
Capture is by appointment. We do not keep an office, counter or walk-in address in Marbella and will not pretend otherwise — the appointment is arranged with you, and everything downstream of it is paperwork moving between two offices in Washington. What the nearest American post can and cannot do
The nearest American post to Marbella is the US Consular Agency in Fuengirola, roughly thirty kilometres away, whose district takes in Málaga province, Granada, Almería, eastern Cádiz, Ceuta and Melilla. It is an agency — limited services, by appointment — rather than a consulate, and the two things Costa del Sol residents most often go there hoping for are the two it cannot provide. It does not fingerprint for FBI Identity History Summary purposes, because no American embassy or consulate does. It cannot apostille a US federal document, because the U.S. Department of State in Washington is the only authority that can.
Which office receives the apostilled summary
Marbella is in Málaga province, so the file is presented to the Oficina de Extranjería for Málaga and biometrics are booked through the national cita previa portal under Málaga. Two Andalusian details are worth knowing. Some Andalusian offices operate limited walk-in provision for genuinely urgent matters, which is unusual in Spain and occasionally useful — but it is discretionary and not something to build a plan around. And the padrón rule is the same as everywhere: registration in Marbella, Estepona or San Pedro all place you in Málaga province and therefore in the Málaga queue.

Translation requirements in Málaga province
A traductor jurado appointed by the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores through the Oficina de Interpretación de Lenguas is required, and the ministry's public register filters to Málaga province. Málaga's English-language listing is reasonably well stocked, reflecting the coast's resident population, though as in Alicante a share of the entries are stale. The appointment is national, so a Málaga file may use a translator registered anywhere in Spain — worth remembering when the local list goes quiet in August, which on this coast it reliably does. Translation follows the apostille; never the other way round.
Getting the document back into Marbella
The courier leg lands at Málaga–Costa del Sol, thirty-odd minutes from Marbella. Personal documents are duty-free yet still pass a customs check, and accurate description on the air waybill is what keeps a package moving rather than parked. Given how much Costa del Sol paperwork is coordinated through a gestor or an abogado rather than filed in person, the scan we issue the day Washington signs the apostille is usually the operative deliverable; the originals arrive afterwards and are needed at the appointment itself.

Can the consular agency in Fuengirola do my fingerprints?+
No. It is thirty kilometres away and it is the closest American office to Marbella, which makes it the natural assumption — but no American post anywhere provides fingerprinting for FBI Identity History Summary purposes. The agency handles other consular business by appointment. Fingerprints for an FBI check need a provider that can submit them to the FBI, and we do that in Marbella directly.
Can Fuengirola or Málaga apostille the FBI summary once I have it?+
No. Nothing in Spain can apostille a US federal document. An apostille authenticates the signature on the document, so it has to come from the authority that holds that signer's specimen signature — for an FBI Identity History Summary, the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC, and nowhere else. Spanish offices receive apostilled documents; they never produce the apostille itself.
Do I file in Marbella or in Málaga?+
Málaga. Marbella is in Málaga province, and Spanish immigration procedure is organised by province, so the Oficina de Extranjería for Málaga is your office and Málaga is the province you select when booking cita previa. Residents of Estepona and San Pedro are in exactly the same position.
Everyone is away in August and I can't reach a sworn translator. Options?+
Use one registered in another province. A traductor jurado's appointment by the MAEC is national, so a translator in Madrid or Seville produces a translation just as valid for your Málaga file as one based on the coast. The province filter in the ministry's register is a convenience feature, and August is precisely when ignoring it is the right call.
I heard Andalusia lets you turn up without an appointment.+
