How the sequence runs

  1. 1 · Fingerprints, wherever you are. We schedule the capture and produce a print set the FBI accepts — at home in the US, or abroad, where no embassy or consulate will take them for you.
  2. 2 · FBI submission. Your prints go to the FBI through an approved channel and come back as the Identity History Summary — the document Portugal actually asks for.
  3. 3 · Federal apostille. We file the summary in person at the U.S. Department of State counter in Washington, DC, skipping the months-long mail queue.
  4. 4 · Certified Portuguese translation. Translated after the apostille so the certificate itself is covered — the order Portugal's authorities expect.

Getting fingerprinted in Portugal

Prints are the one step that happens where you are, and no US embassy or consulate captures them. We take prints by appointment — see Lisbon for how the local capture works.

Not sure whether Portugal requires all of this? The Portugal apostille page covers the requirement itself — which visa categories ask for the check, how recent it must be, and what the consulate expects.

Federal Apostille™ is a private, independent courier and document-processing service. We are not affiliated with the FBI, the U.S. Department of State, the government of Portugal, or any government agency.
